The Japanese kanji in the latter sticker spell out 3Rensho, which means "three lucky victories," and refers to the fact that his first frame won its first three races (as i understand it, anyway)...

Ever notice how similar the "1s" sticker is to the late Cinelli "flying C" logo? In combination with the two arc-en-ciel bands on the seat tube, there seems to be some reverance for the italian brand in konno's graphic design.

Cyclone is apparently the real name of the company, not 3Rensho. See the Yellow Jersey site for background on that...

Previous frame owner claimed to have bought this NOS from Andrew Muzi at Yellow Jersey around 2002. Photos of this batch of frames are still up on Andrew's site. I should probably write to him for more details on the age of this frame, and whatever else he can tell me...

05/16/07 - here's info on the katana/s from the yellow jersey site:

"Built with the same Ishiwata 022 tubes by the same builder (Mr Makino or Makino-san to you) to the same Yoshi Konno geometry wrote for the 3Rensho team bike Katana Pro. These frames have classic simple lugs and a basic finish quality in a distinctive white and blue fade. This is the best value in a new racing frameset we've seen at just $SOLD... Just 5.25lbs frame and fork (56cm)"

No date of manufacture is listed on the site.

06/26/07: another update - andrew muzi responded to my email inquiry and said that the katana/s frames were made between 1988 and 1992.

Sugino 75 Road crankset and matching Sugino 75 braze-on front derailleur. This derailleur is adjustable relative to the plane of the chainwheel without loosening the attachment to the braze-on. I think some later Suntour FD's had the same feature. Much less frustrating than FD's whithout it, which change their angle as you tighten the attachment bolt.

Chainrings are Shimano 130BCD. Note that Sugino 75 track cranks are 144BCD.

Also, Sugino 75's (and maybe other Sugino/Suntour cranks) have a non-standard square-taper mounting size, which i believe is 2-degrees taper. Mounting them on a standard (i.e. 1970's Campy Record) spindle causes them to sit too far outboard. However, modern Campagnolo square taper BB's work well - this BB is a Campagnolo ACH. Cranks are mounted with Chrome Sugino Track crank bolts.
