Campagnolo "Pave Style"

I'm calling the irregular texture or dots on the front parallelogram plate of early Campagnolo rear derailleurs "Pave Style", contrasted with the orderly rows of dots (squares actually) most commonly seen on Nuovo Record rear's. Pave, of course, represents the cobbles of France and Belgum, but also a jewlrey store in Oakland, Calif. where my wife and I got our wedding rings. It's called Pave and the jewler does incrusted diamonds resembling Pave. Pave Style is also seen on Campag. QR's, front derailleurs and tools. On rear derailleurs, Pave Style carries through from Gran Sport of the 1950's to early Nuovo Record. Pave Style, however, may have disappeared from the NR rear mech. after 1970.

Gran_Sport

1950's Campagnolo Gran Sport. Not the best condition for illustrating the Pave Style, but it's there!

Record

1960's Record: texture on the front parallelogram plate looks like the worn-down cobbles of Paris-Roubaix! Now, that's Pave Style!

Think the pully wheels are original, see Chuck Schmidt's informative comment.

Nuovo Record "Patent" pair (1968 or 69): Mech on left has irregular dots that I call "Pave Style". Right mech has orderly dots (squares if you look closely) - this is not Pave Style!

These bodies have seen better days, eh?

Nuovo Record Patent-70: this pair is in better condition, nicely showing the cosmetic difference of Pave Style vs. orderly squares... Who needs order?

NR Patent-70: again, cosmetics on the front plate are the most striking difference between these derailleurs from 1970
