In the first relay [[Beuck]] of the local wheelmen held his own with [[West]], the [[crack]] [[Bay City]] man. He passed the packet safely to [[B. Murphy|Murphy]], who held his own against his opponents. He and [[Carlson]] of the [[New Centuries]] crossed the tape ahead of the other three riders. Carlson led by a few feet, but this had been previously arranged between Murphy and Berryessa, the third rider for the Garden City Wheelmen. Berryessa was pitted against [[Schou]] of the New Centuries, who was predicted to take the lead for his team. He was not successful, however, for Berryessa can sprint a little and he gave a [[spurt]] and passed the New Century man and the clever Garden City rider was soon out of sight. He gained just a minute on his opponents and during the remainder of the race the Garden City Wheelmen rode by themselves.
