Leonard D. Owens
The club was organized in 1879 [1878 - MF] with three members, and seventy-five are now on the roll. The officers are: - George J. Hobe, President; L. D. Owens, Vice President; E. Christ, Secretary; Dr. C. Spencer, Treasurer; F. G. H. Manning, Captain; H. S. Field, C. A. McDonald, Club Committee. The new apartments comprise a parlor, billiard, smoking, wheel, dressing, bath, janitor and locker rooms, and are comfortably furnished.
Frank L. Hunter, the first lieutenant of the wheelmen, is satisfied to devote his energies almost exclusively to cycling, considering it the greatest of all sport. W. H. Haley, the second lieutenant, is perhaps the speediest rider in the club, and bids fair to develop into a great racing man. Lewis C. Hunter, the secretary of the wheelmen, is also secretary-treasurer of the California Associated Cycling Clubs, to which position he was elected at the meeting of the board of governors of the associated clubs held in this city on the 7th inst. Martin Espinosa, Edward Stack, J. A. R. Johnson, J. H. Ballin, O. A. Weihe, J. H. Dieckman Jr., F. L. Fuller, O. B. Burns, L. B. Thomas, H. C. Massie, L. H. Cox, W. B. Lovegrove, L. D. Owens, J. L. Mastelller, Frank Twichell, Cress Unger and H. H. White are some of the prominent and active members of the wheelmen. Director J. R. McElroy is the presiding officer of the wheelmen, and represents them in the board of directors of the Olympic Club.
Len D. Owens is one of the newer lights in the cycling world, but is making his presence felt by his good business sense and his capacity for work.
The advisory Committee selected by R. A. Irving to assist him in the promotion of the cycling tournament at the Pavilion consists of the following well-known members of the cycling clubs:
Representing the League of American Wheelmen - R. M. Welch, C. K. Melrose, R. A. Smyth.
Bay City Wheelmen - F. H. Kerrigan, W. D. Sheldon.
Olympic Club Wheelmen - L. D. Owens, L. C. Hunter.
Last Sunday a very pleasant and enjoyable trip on the wheel was enjoyed bv H. H. White, L. D. Owens, B. T. Edwards, L. H. Cox, Milton Unger, Eugene Unger and C. Adams, which was in the form of a reunion of old members who were active in the management of the old San Francisco Bicycle Club. The run was to Larkspur.
Leonard D. Owens, President of the California Drug and Spice Mills, has many friends who would like to see him at the head of affairs at the Olympic Club. He is among the list of likely candidates.
